Information on Pre-primary Programs in the SRCE

Families who wish to register children for the Pre-primary Program may do so throughout the school year.  Please note the following information:

The Pre-primary Program is available at the following school locations in the Strait Region:

  • Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy (Terre Noire) including children from Pleasant Bay
  • Chedabucto Education Centre/Guysborough Academy (Guysborough)
  • East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy (Monastery)
  • East Richmond Education Centre (St. Peters)
  • Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy (Hazel Hill)
  • Felix Marchand Education Centre (Louisdale)

Important Registration Information

  • Children who are four (4) years of age on or before December 31, 2019, are eligible to attend.
  • The child’s birth certificate, provincial health card and a completed registration form are required to complete the registration process.
  • The School Registration Form for 2019-2020 may be accessed in the Document Depot section of the website at www.srce.ca.
  • It is not necessary for children to accompany parents/guardians to the school for registration.
  • This is a voluntary program and children may only attend for one year.
  • There is no fee to attend the Program.
  • The Program runs from September 2019 to June 2020.
  • Families must live within the respective school’s catchment area to be eligible to attend.
  • When there are available pre-primary spaces, families who live outside a school’s catchment area may apply to have their child attend a Program out of catchment by submitting an Application for Transfer of Students within the Region Request Form. These spaces are limited and will only be considered when space is available and no additional staffing is required to accommodate the request.

Busing for Eligible Pre-primary Children

In the SRCE, busing is available to all pre-primary children eligible to receive bus service in September 2019. Please contact the SRCE Transportation Department staff at 902-747-3645 to determine your eligibility to receive bus service. Before and After Program

Further to the provincial announcement that Nova Scotia’s Before and After Program is expanding across the province, please note that the Program is offered at the following six sites in the SRCE:

The program is open to pre-primary and public school students between the ages of 4 to 12. For more information on the Before and After Program, please access novascotia.ca/BAP. The expansion of the Before and After Program will continue in September 2020.

If your child is registered for pre-primary at a school where the Nova Scotia Before and After Program is available, you can register by contacting the provider delivering the program directly.

Please also note that this is a fee-based program. The fee will be set by the provider. Depending on your household income, you may be eligible to receive a child care subsidy to reduce the cost.
