Nutrition, an Important Part of a Student’s Day


To learn well, our children and youth need to eat well.  Nutrition plays a key role in the healthy development of our children and youth. Nutritious foods provide our body and mind with the energy needed to grow, feel well, be active, stay healthy and learn.

The following information highlights some of the activities and initiatives that are supporting student learning and reinforcing the importance and benefits of making healthy eating choices a regular part of their school day.

Bayview Education Centre is promoting Eat Well Live Well.


Grade 8 students at Bayview Education Centre made a full breakfast consisting of homemade waffles, turkey bacon, fresh fruit topped with Chantilly cream in their Family Studies class under the direction of their teacher, Karen MacIsaac. Students studied how important breakfast is to their learning and the significance of incorporating the four food groups identified by Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating into their meal planning.

Tamarac Education Centre shared some great ideas on how important it is to take the time to eat well at school and work.


Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School students and staff enjoyed these healthy and delicious vegetable and fruit options.

Richmond Education Centre/Academy held a food drive and shared some great information in their “We Wanna “taco” ‘bout food” display.

Dalbrae Academy students and staff enjoyed some of these healthy choices during Nutrition Month!

The topic of nutrition is addressed in many subject areas including Health, Physical Education, Personal Development Relationships (PDR), Family Studies, Physical Active Lifestyles and Career Life Management.

With the support of students, staff and community volunteers, Breakfast Programs in schools provide a healthy and smart start to the school day.  In addition, the School Board’s School Health Nurse Liaison, Michelle Thompson, works closely with schools on a number of health-related initiatives to support student learning as well as providing advice and resources.
