Registration for the Pre-primary Program and Grade Primary for the 2020-2021 School Year is Ongoing in the SRCE

Pre-primary Program Registration Information

The Pre-primary Program is available at the following school locations:

  • Antigonish Education Centre (Antigonish)
  • Bayview Education Centre (Port Hood)
  • Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy (Terre Noire)
  • Chedabucto Education Centre/Guysborough Academy (Guysborough)
  • East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy (Monastery)
  • East Richmond Education Centre (St. Peters)
  • Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy (Hazel Hill)
  • Felix Marchand Education Centre (Louisdale)
  • H.M. MacDonald Elementary School (Maryvale)
  • Inverness Education Centre/Academy (Inverness)
  • St. Andrews Consolidated School (St. Andrews)
  • St. Mary’s Education Centre/Academy (Sherbrooke)
  • Tamarac Education Centre (Port Hawkesbury)
  • Whycocomagh Education Centre (Whycocomagh)

Eligibility and Program Information

  • Children who are four (4) years of age on or before December 31, 2020, are eligible to attend.
  • Parents are required to provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate and provincial health card information.
  • This is a voluntary program and children may only attend for one year.
  • There is no fee for the Program.
  • The Program will run from September 2020 to June 2021.
  • When there are available pre-primary spaces, families who live outside a school’s catchment area may apply to have their child attend a Program out of catchment by submitting an Application for Transfer of Students within the Region Request Form located in the Document Depot of the SRCE website. These spaces are limited and will only be considered when space is available and no additional staffing is required to accommodate the request.
  • Bus routes will not be altered in the event that a child has been approved to attend a Program outside their family's catchment area.

Busing Eligibility

In the SRCE, busing is available to all pre-primary children eligible to receive bus service. Please contact the SRCE Transportation Department staff at 902-747-3645 to determine your eligibility to receive bus service.

Grade Primary Registration in English and French Immersion

Families who wish to register children for Grade Primary may contact their local school. Please access the 2020-2021 School Directory for contact information.

Registration Information

  • Children who are five (5) years of age on or before December 31, 2020, are eligible to attend Grade Primary.
  • Parents are required to provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate and provincial health card information. 
     

French Immersion Program Information

  • The French Immersion Program is available to all students in the Strait Region and is offered at the French Immersion School closest to your home.  Schools that offer French Immersion include Antigonish Education Centre, Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy, East Richmond Education Centre, Felix Marchand Education Centre and Tamarac Education Centre.   
  • In instances where existing regional centre transportation is not available, the parent/guardian is responsible to transport the student to and from the French Immersion School at no cost to the SRCE.
  • For the French Immersion Program only, in accordance with provincial class cap guidelines, the first 20 students registered at each school will be accepted into the Program, and the remainder placed on a waiting list in the order which they registered.
  • Antigonish Education Centre: Please note the class size hard cap for the French Immersion Program at the school has been reached as per the provincial Class Cap Guidelines. All subsequent registrations for French Immersion will be placed on a wait list.
