SRCE Celebrates Family Literacy Day on January 27, 2020, and Through the Year

The Strait Regional Centre for Education invites students, staff, families, volunteers, and community partners to celebrate Family Literacy Day on Monday, January 27, and throughout the year, by setting aside time to read with children and youth, and inspire them to become lifelong readers.

Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

Literacy skills are essential for lifelong success.  Encouraging reading and writing together as a family helps students develop good listening, speaking, vocabulary and language skills, imagination and creativity, and contributes to their future success and well-being.

There are many ways to develop and strengthen literacy skills from reading a book together, playing a word game, writing, making a list, using a recipe, surfing the web or just simply having a conversation.

Some of the school-based activities planned to celebrate Family Literacy Day on January 27, 2020, and throughout the school year, are included below. Please note that as more school plans are finalized, the information below will be updated.

Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy

Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy is hosting “Oh, The Places You’ll Go: Travel the World from CBHEC/A” for Grades Primary to 8 students as part of their Family Literacy Day celebrations on Monday, January 27, 2020.  Families, friends, neighbours and community members have been invited to read, write, speak or just sit and listen.  Students will learn about all the different cultures in the school and school community. Everyone is invited to dress up like a tourist and travel into literacy!

Chedabucto Education Centre/Guysborough Academy

Family Literacy Day celebrations will be focused on students in Grades Primary to 8 as high school students are writing exams.  The day will begin with a mystery guest reader joining all classes to read to students to give them a different read aloud experience.  Throughout the day, students will rotate through several literacy stations and participate in activities that include bookmark making, cultural literacy activities, a book swap, recipe reading and other literacy games.  Members of the school community are also taking part in this fun-filled literacy extravaganza!

East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy

Guest readers from the school community have been invited to read with Pre-primary to Grade 3 classes. In addition, in the afternoon, family members and Junior High students will read together as part of the school’s Snuggle Up and Read event.

Felix Marchand Education Centre

Felix Marchand Education Centre has been working with several community partners on ways to promote positive relationships in school, at home and in the community.  In partnership with the Richmond Literacy Network, children in the Pre-primary Program and students in Grade Primary are taking part in a program facilitated by the Network’s staff where they read stories and then make a craft about the story.  Their next visit will take place during Family Literacy Week 2020.

Whycocomagh Education Centre

The school’s WE Day Committee has invited parents and family members to join the Family Literacy Day celebrations on Monday, January 27, 2020.  In the afternoon, all students will gather with their reading buddies in the gymnasium to read together for 30 minutes.  Families are invited to bring their favourite children’s books to share.  The goal is to fill the gymnasium with reading and see how many books everyone can read together.

Literacy instruction is a priority for all students in the SRCE, across subjects and grade levels.  Further, the goal of improving student achievement in literacy is one of the main goals included in both the SRCE’s System Improvement Plan and Education Business Plan for 2019-2020.  Both of these plans focus on goals and priorities that will raise the bar and close the gap to address the needs of all learners in the SRCE. For more information, please access the complete plan at SRCE System Improvement Plan for 2019-2020, and access the infographic below or online at SRCE System Improvement Plan 2019-2020 Infographic.  Additional information may be accessed in the SRCE Educational Business Plan for 2019-2020.

Let’s make reading and learning together part of our everyday activities in and out of the classroom.
