During the month of April, 18 students from Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy, Dalbrae Academy, Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional High School and Chedabucto Education Centre/Guysborough Academy competed in the Nova Scotia Skills Competition at the Strait, Akerley and Waterfront campuses of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). The students competed in the categories of Baking, Job Search, Carpentry, Photography, TV / Video Production, Welding and Workplace Safety. In addition, approximately 500 students in the Strait Regional School Board toured Nova Scotia Skills competitions at the NSCC Strait, Akerley and Waterfront Campuses where they actively participated in career exploration.
Each of the students from Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy participated in one event in the categories of TV/Video Production, Job Search, Carpentry, Photography and Baking. Three students brought home medals! Emma MacKinnon earned a Silver Medal in Baking; Jessie Daley, a Gold Medal in Job Search; and Campbell Hart, a Bronze Medal in Job Search! As a Gold Medalist, Jesse Daley will go on to participate in the National Skills Competition as a part of Team Nova Scotia.
As the Nova Scotia Skills Competition website points out, the Competition provides opportunities for youth to explore skilled trades and technologies, enhance their skills, and strive for excellence in a chosen field. Gold medal winners advance to the Skills Canada National Competition. The Skills Canada National Competition is an opportunity for skilled young Nova Scotians to showcase their talent at the national level, improve their skills, and jump start their careers.
Congratulations to all students and medalists!
