Changes to Bus Routes
Details related to any changes to bus routes will be communicated to students and parents/guardians through the school and/or direct contact with parents/guardians. It is expected that several days may be required for students and bus drivers to become fully accustomed to their routes.  Your patience and cooperation is appreciated.

Bus Stop Information
Please contact the Transportation Department staff at 902-747-3645 for further information related to your child's bus stop. The Strait Regional School Board must follow the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board's regulations with respect to pupil transportation. For example, the following regulation states:  “The driver of a school bus shall not stop the bus for the purpose of taking on or discharging passengers at:

(a) more than three (3) places in 1.6 km (1 mile) OR (b) a place that has not been designated as a loading station by a school board or other authority by or on whose behalf the bus is operating.”

Spur Route Service
The Strait Regional School Board will continue to implement Transportation Department, Policy IX-A-1, Mandate and Standards, 1.3 Spur Route Service, which states:

“Off-route listed road service will only be considered where the condition of the road is such that the bus can travel safely and with a suitable turning place maintained at no cost to the Board.  School buses will not proceed into an off-route road or subdivision for the purpose of pickup or unloading pupils unless such pupils live more than 0.8 kilometers therein.”

School Bus Safety
Students, parents/guardians, motorists, the school bus driver, teachers and Transportation Department staff share the responsibility for school bus safety.  Please slow down in school zones, pay extra attention to children walking to and from school and never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing.  The speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h in areas where the approaching limit is 50 km/h, when children are present.  In school areas where the surrounding speed zone is higher, the speed limit is 50 km/h when children are present.   For more information on bus safety, please access the brochure entitled, School Bus Safety:  A Guide for Students and Parents/Guardians available in the Document Depot section of the School Board’s website at www.srsb.ca.  For more information on School Zone Safety, please visit the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal website for more information on School Zone Safety at https://novascotia.ca/tran/ .  By working together, we will ensure the bus trip is a safe one.

Integrated Booster Seats
As part of its safety program, the Province of Nova Scotia introduced integrated booster seats in all newly purchased school busses.   These seats will be used for those students who weigh less than 40 pounds and who will most benefit from this enhancement to school busses.    As a result, during the first week of school, Grades Primary and One students traveling on busses equipped with an integrated booster seat will be assessed to determine if they will be assigned to a booster seat.  If your child meets the criteria, parents/guardians will be notified following the assessment.

Day Care Facilities
The Strait Regional School Board will not alter or extend bus routes for the purpose of transporting students to after-school programs offered by Day Care Facilities.

Pre-Primary Programs
Parents/guardians may access all of the program details, including information on eligibility, how to pre-register and site locations, on the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development website at https://www.ednet.ns.ca/pre-primary.  Parents/ guardians may also pre-register their child by calling the Department directly toll-free at 1-833-424-2084.
